i realize it’s all very early — but i didn’t quite anticipate the work load i’m currently getting from a combination of work, school, and friends, and so i’m going to have to take a break from the blog. however, i will try to get back on top of things asap!

i just wanted to give a heads up!

Mount Kangchenjunga as seen from Darjeeling, West Bengal, India

Kangchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world with an elevation of 8,586 m (28,169 ft) and located along the India-Nepal border in the Himalayas. Kangchenjunga is also the name of the section of the Himalayas and means “The Five Treasures of Snows”, as it contains five peaks, four of them over 8,450 m (27,720 ft). The treasures represent the five repositories of God, which are gold, silver, gems, grain, and holy books. Three of the five peaks – main, central, and south – are on the border of North Sikkim in India and Taplejung District of Nepal, while the other two are completely in Taplejung District. The Kangchenjunga Himal includes twelve more peaks over 7,000 m (23,000 ft).
Big Ben in London, England

Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, and is generally extended to refer to the clock or the clock tower as well. The clock tower holds the largest four-faced chiming clock in the world and is the third-tallest free-standing clock tower. It celebrated its 150th anniversary on 31 May 2009, during which celebratory events took place. The tower was completed on 10 April 1858 and has become one of the most prominent symbols of both London and England, often in the establishing shot of films set in the city.

This is the Rossio Train Station in Lisbon, Portugal. The architecture is incredible, with the facade outside being very impressive, but the light inside might be even better.

We took a bus to Milan and the hopped a plane to Barcelona. (The bus ride took us through the Lake Como area, but I didn’t spot George Clooney.) The view of the Alps from the plane was stunning. I took about a billion and a half pictures. When I first glimpsed the Rockies this summer, I figured that was as good as it gets, but the Alps make the Rockies look like pleasant rolling hills.

Khara-Khoto, or Black Water City, in Ejin Banner, Alxa League, Inner Mongolia, China

The city was founded in 1032 and became a thriving center of Tangut Empire trade in the 11th century. There are remains of 30-foot (9.1 m)-high ramparts and 12-foot (3.7 m)-thick outer walls. The outer walls ran for some 421 m (1,381 ft) east-west by 374 m (1,227 ft) north-south. The walled fortress was first taken by Genghis Khan in 1226, but—contrary to a widely-circulated misunderstanding—the city continued to flourish under Mongol overlordship. During Kublai Khan’s time, the city was expanded, reaching a size three times bigger than during the Tangut Empire. Togoontemur Khan concentrated his preparation for reconquest of China at Khara-Khoto. The city was located on the crossroads connecting Karakorum, Xanadu and Kumul.
